Project Abstract | PWA International is based on the Naas Road Rathcoole Co. Dublin. The company employs 150 staff and is involved in the over-haul and repair of aircraft engine cases for large commercial airlines. Engine cases are sent to PWAI from around the world for assessment service and repair. Previously aircraft engine cases were prepared/cleaned in a clean line featuring a number of open 6000 litre tanks containing chemical cleaning agents and rinse water. These tanks were non-insulated and needed to be maintained at temperatures of 80C. The tanks were emptied periodically and the contents disposed of as hazardous waste. The CGPP project which was completed involved removing a number of the cleanline tanks and replacing the tanks with two closed loop washing machines. The main advantages of the washing machines were a reduction in water consumption, reduction in gas usage as the tanks no longer need to be heated, reduction in the quantity of chemical used and a reduction in the quantity of hazardous waste being shipped off-site for treatment. The quantity of hazardous waste from the cleanline has reduced by 17% from 2005 to 2006 even though 2006 was an extremely busy year for PWA. |
