Project Abstract This study will use hydrogeology, geochemistry and chemical speciation studies to investigate the presence of elevated Arsenic (As) abundances in a significant number of groundwater wells from the Clew Bay area, western Ireland. Comparative studies of groundwater, bedrock and mineral chemistry will be linked to hydrogeology, GIS and statistical studies. This approach will facilitate characterisation of the temporal and spatial distribution of As as a function of groundwater and bedrock geology using the pressures, pathways and receptors approach. Arsenic speciation studies will determine As toxicity, bioavailability and potential for migration in this environment thus addressing human health issues.
