  Project Abstract The proposed research will address the aim which is to develop management strategies for the protection of high status water bodies in Ireland. The project will, frame its findings within the context of both national and international information and experiences that will a) review and b) recommend strategies for the protection of high status sites. The project will include scientific information, that provides a rationale for site protection; the policy framework which provides insight to integration of policies, potential conflicts and contradictions; and stakeholder engagement and fiscal options necessary for local support for site protection. A Project Steering group is proposed to be established for the duration of the project. WP 1 A review of how legislation effects or fails to protect high status sites in Ireland; a comparison of determination, monitoring and protection of high status sites across the EU: and recommendations of good practice, including socio-political approaches to site protection. WP 2 Guidance document on the protection of High-Status water bodies and supporting datasets; and case studies on implementation of guidance. WP 3 Management strategies report; Final report; website material for dissemination of project findings; Presentation to EPA Water Conference 2011; 1 scientific peer reviewed paper on project outcomes.
