| Project Abstract | We are currently using too many resources and producing too many emissions at global, European and national levels. Minerals, metals and energy, as well as stocks of fish, timber, water, fertile soils, clean air, biomass, biodiversity are all under pressure. Climate change is a real and massive threat to life on our planet as we know it. We need to reverse current trends. For these and other reasons, resource efficiency is a critical policy objective and a cornerstone of Europe 2020: A strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. It is also a major policy objective for Ireland - to achieve environmental and economic benefits. This project aims to develop a roadmap for the development of a National Resource Efficiency Plan, with a view to facilitating a Resource Efficient Ireland. Using best practice examples from Ireland and elsewhere and consulting with all the main stakeholders in Ireland with regard to resource efficiency, Clean Technology Centre at CIT will develop a detailed and comprehensive roadmap to help transform Ireland into a resource efficient economy. Such a document will help to support, harmonise and co-ordinate the many worthwhile resource-efficient policies, programmes and actions already in place in Ireland. A roadmap for Resource Efficiency in Ireland will greatly aid national environmental and economic policy development. It will support and advance Irish national strategies and policies for Climate Change, Sustainable Development, Environmental Technologies, Waste Management, Green Public Procurement, Energy, Air and Water as well in meet objectives in overarching policies such as those outlined in Building Irelands Smart Economy, A Framework for Sustainable Economic Revival. It will also help to harmonise and coordinate the many worthwhile resource-efficient policies, programmes and actions already in place in Ireland, involving the many different stakeholders and agencies active in this area. |
