Project Abstract | As part of this research project, Ryan Hanley will: *Review the adequacy of existing legislation relating to the collection disposal and sustainable re-use of domestic wastewater sludges, *Quantify likely sludge volumes associated with septic tank/OSTWS maintenance under a new regulated and licensed regime, *Analyse the spatial distribution of such sludge volumes from primarily rural dwellers throughout Ireland, *Examine the Sludge Management Plans of water service authorities with a view to quantifying an inventory of residual capacity within existing municipal wastewater treatment plants and satellite sludge Centres for the reception of untreated sewage sludges, etc, *Compile an inventory of available spare capacity at these centralised sludge treatment centres, *Evaluate environmental constraints pertinent to the use of land spreading and review best practice, *Evaluate the potential for establishment and or development of alternative disposal routes other than land spreading, and; *Review of existing legislation and guidelines relating to the issue of waste collection permits under the Waste Management (Collection Permit) Regulations 2007 and the Waste Management (Collection Permit) (Amendment) Regulations 2008. Ryan Hanley will produce: *Sectional reports for work packages, *A final report setting out: *Main conclusions of the research, *Available spare capacity or capacity deficit for reception and treatment of such sludges at the various regional centres, *Potential for the development of alternative technologies, *Infrastructural deficits, *Customisation of licences granted to waste disposal companies for the collection and transport of untreated sludge, *A summary of the project findings for posting on the EPA website, and; *Powerpoint presentations for delivery to the EPA and the NIECE working group on DWWTS. |
