Organisation or Individual Expertise:
Dr Olaf Schmidt’s main research interests are in soil science, in particular in the biology, biodiversity, ecology and biochemistry of soils in the context of soil–plant–animal systems.
His research is focussing on biological processes because they control most goods and services provided by soils, including nutrient mineralisation, residue decomposition, carbon sequestration and pest control. The overall objective of his research programme is to provide land-based industries with strategies aimed at protecting soil resources, optimizing ecosystem services, maximising nutrient efficiency, replacing energy-costly fertilizers with natural processes and residue recycling, and improving natural pest control.
