Organisation or Individual Expertise:
The Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) is a part of the Department of Communications Energy and Natural Resources. GSI is the national repository for geosciencce data since its foundation in 1845. It currently has a multi-disciplinary staff (40 permanent and 30 contract) committed to serving a wide customer base. The GSI provides objective scientific information on Ireland’s earth resources. This information is available to inform all levels of decision-making in central and local Government and the Public in matters relating to earth processes, resources, heritage and the environment. Good decisions are based on good science. Good science is based on long-term data acquisition by highly qualified scientific and technical staff, relevant data interpretation, applied research and effective dissemination of information to our clients. GSI work programmes underpin improvements to our quality of life, our economic development and the protection of our environment. The main research areas are raw materials, geological mapping both onshore and offshore, hydrogeology, geoheritage, satelite remote sensing and coastal marine habitat mapping.
