Organisation or Individual Expertise:
Woodland Ecology - My PhD was on the ecology of yew-woods in Ireland and primarily focused on grazing interactions and adaptation to shade. I was lead ecologist on the National Survey of Native Woodlands (2003-2008) and surveyed several hundred sites across the country, recording and analysing data on vegetation, stand structure, soils, grazing and management. I have been involved in the development of assessment criteria for Annex I woodland habitats. With one my colleagues I also worked on a project to establish the Ancient and Long-established Woodlands Inventory for Ireland. Uplands Ecology - I am currently lead ecologist on the National Survey of Upland Habitats (2009-) and have surveyed several substantial upland sites (e.g Mount Brandon, Slieve League, Ben Bulben, Comeragh Mountains). As part of this project I have been involved in developing monitoring protocols and assessment criteria for a wide range of Annex I habitats, including blanket bog, heathland, upland grassland, scree and rocky slopes. Coastal Ecology - I am currently working on an assessment of angiosperms within saltmarshes for the purposes of the Water Frameworks Directive. This project involves the use of LIDAR data to model potential habitat niche in coastal areas Grassland Ecology - I worked on the Irish Semi-natural Grassland Survey (2007-2013) and surveyed many sites grassland sites across the country. This project involved the mapping and assessment of Annex I grassland habitats. Vegetation Classification - I have conducted multivariate analysis to produce national scale classification systems for a range of habitats including woodlands, upland habitats, sea cliffs, saltmarshes and grasslands. The national classification of Irish woodland vegetation has now been adopted by Woodlands of Ireland. My long-term aim are to contribute towards an Irish Vegetation Classification.
