Organisation or Individual Expertise:
I hold a B.A. (Mod) in Natural Sciences (Zoology) from Trinity College Dublin and an M.Sc. in Fisheries Management, Development and Conservation from the National University Ireland, Cork. I have over eight years’ experience in ecological consultancy, from proposal preparation through field survey planning and execution to report writing. I have carried out field surveys all across Ireland, including freshwater invertebrate sampling for Q-index calculation, otter (Lutra lutra) surveys, macrophyte surveys, marine macroinvertebrate sampling, and marine and freshwater fish surveys. These surveys have been carried out as part of Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA) contributing to the preparation of Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), Appropriate Assessments (AA) and Natura Impact Statements (NIS) as required under the Habitats Directive. I hold a Freshwater Macroinvertebrate Species Identification Qualification (IdQ) from the Natural History Museum, London, a JNCC-recognised Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) Certificate, Personal Survival Techniques (PST) Certificate STCW-95 and a National Powerboat Certificate Level 2. I have experience with the GIS systems MapInfo and ArcGIS. I worked as a temporary Conservation Ranger with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) based in Co. Louth from 2008-2010. In this role, I expanded his knowledge of terrestrial ecology through carrying out monitoring of Natura 2000 sites, botanical training, contributed to the National Survey of Carabus in Ireland, and contributed bird records, including kingfisher, to the Bird Atlas 2007-2011. In 2009, I managed a project which surveyed the distribution of otters in the River Boyne Catchment, which formed part of the national monitoring scheme run by the NPWS. I also developed a GIS database of potential wetland sites in Co. Louth, which went on to form the basis of the Louth Wetland Survey carried out in 2011 and 2012.
