Chemical Oceanography: Investigations into the biogeochemical cycling of trace elements in the open and coastal ocean with emphasis on elements that influence primary productivity (e.g. Fe, Cd, Co, Cu, Zn), climate relevant processes (e.g. Iodine) or elucidate key processes such a scavenging or disaggregation (e.g. Ti, Al and Mn). Particular speciality in redox relevant processes in oceanic oxygen minimum zones and in terms of benthic-pelagic coupling. Applications of PARAFAC to determining CDOM distribution in the ocean from 3D EEM fluorescence data. Interactions of elemental cycles with picoplankton (e.g. Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus). Archaea and bacterial involvement in the nitrogen cycle. Surfactants in the ocean. Tracers of ocean mixing (e.g. 223Ra, 224Ra, H2O2). Ocean acidification effects on biogeochemical cycles. Environmental Chemistry: Fate of nanoparticles in aquatic enviroments. Redox processes in natural waters. Organic halogen formation (e.g. THM) in water systems (e.g. via UV or Ozonation). Analytical Chemistry: Development of analytical methods for the determination of trace element speciation at in situ concentrations under ambient conditions. Determine the kinetics of key processes involving trace element and reactive oxygen species (ROS) under present and future ocean conditions. Particular focus is on the reactions with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide (O2-). Remote sensing: Incorporation of satellite products with ocean observations from AUVs, gliders and moored sensors to gain \'big picture\' views of ocean biogeochemical processes. Modelling: Development of time dependent models for fast reactions in seawater (e.g. metal-organic complexation, photochemical mediated redox processes). 1D models reactive-diffusion models for vertical column distribution of chemical species. Intentions to develop full biogeochemical ROMS model for the west of Ireland. Experience: Over 500 days at sea on 15 major research expeditions in the North and South Atlantic, South Pacific and Southern Ocean.
