Organisation or Individual Expertise:
Working in the area of applied ecology and agri-environmental management for 15 years. During this time I have worked in various roles in private, public and semi state bodies as an educator, farm advisor and researcher. Doctoral research was completed at the National University of Ireland, Galway, on turloughs ecosystems (seasonal karst wetlands). Currently employed as a lecturer in Ecology and Environmental Science at IT Sligo, my main research interests include agro-ecology; sustainable agricultural systems; high nature value farmland; grazing ecology; wetland eosystems; development of agri-environment schemes; biodiversity and ecosystem services; rural development. Before joining IT Sligo in 2009 I was the knowledge transfer and ecological research specialist in the 5 year Burren Life programme - a programme whose success in engaging and empowering local communities was internationally recognised and whose innovations have now been taken on by the State in the expanded Burren Farming for Conservation Programme. I am currently a principle investigator in applied ecology at the Centre for Environmental Research Innovation and Sustainability at IT Sligo. Current research projects include IDEAL_HNV (identification of the extent and distribution of high nature value farmland in Ireland); peatland restoration and C sequestration on cutaway peatlands; development of targeted output based agri-environment programmes in Ireland (outreach programme in conjunction with Heritage Council and European Forum on Nature Conservation and Pastoralism); AranLIFE-The sustainable management of the priority terrrestrial Habitats Directive Annex 1 habitats of the Aran Islands.
