Organisation or Individual Expertise:
After graduating as an Environmental Engineer I worked on a technology development project with Atlas Ireland (in conjunction with NUI Galway). As part of this role I undertook the design of wastewater facilities and worked on soil remediation projects. I then worked as a private consultant (structural and wastewater) for a number of engineering consultancies. In 2005 I was appointed as a research engineer with NUI Galway and led a number of key projects developing large scale research infrastructure in the water, wastewater and environmental engineering sectors. In parallel I completed a PhD part-time. On completing a PhD in Civil Engineering I was appointed as a lecturer (above the bar) at NUI Galway. Since then my role has combined research, management, and academic roles along with extensive research and technology development collaborations with industry. I currently manage over € 1.1 m of research funding (with a further € 2.95 m pending) and a team of 12 postgraduate and research staff. I have successfully completed € 2.0 m in research projects. My main funding sources include the EPA, SFI, Enterprise Ireland, EU FP7, NRA & DoTTS, and Industry. Key recent outputs: • Design, installation, commissioning and operation of numerous on-site research water and wastewater treatment (ranging in size from 50 – 750 PE) and monitoring systems. • Co-inventor of 3 patented technologies (one of which is being licensed by an Irish company) and has currently lodged a further 3 invention disclosures in the water and wastewater sector. • Co-authored over 45 peer reviewed journal and conference publications and 10 market, policy and technology reports for the Environmental Protection Agency, National Roads Authority, local government and private industry. • Current research funding: € 1.1 m (excl. € 2.95 m FP7 grant). Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI or collaborator on research projects worth over € 6.2 m (includes € 2.95 m EU FP7 grant). • Completed pilot-scale technology evaluations for 7 Irish SMEs in the last 2 years.
