Organisation or Individual Expertise:
My main areas of interest are wastewater treatment and phosphorus recovery. I am particularly interested in examining technologies which could be used to recovery phosphorus in an agricultural setting. After completion of my primary degree in civil engineering in NUI Galway I pursued a PhD in environmental engineering. My thesis examined methods to reduce phosphorus loss form agriculture and allowed me to develop an in-depth knowledge of nutrients losses to water and technologies to mitigate losses. After completing my PhD in 2011 I worked as a research engineer with my Civil Engineering and the Ryan Institute. I was responsible for the operation of a pilot-scale wastewater treatment plant in Tuam Wastewater Treatment Plant and two laboratory-scale units examining municipal wastewater and landfill leachate in NUI Galway. This position also allowed me to work as part of a research team on an Enterprise Ireland-funded feasibility study of a novel wastewater treatment technology in a slaughter house wastewater treatment plant and gain experience conducting market feasibility reports for Enterprise Ireland. I was then offered a Post-Doctoral position with the Crop Soil and Environmental Sciences Department, University of Arkansas. In this role I developed an in-depth understanding the effect of agricultural derived phosphorus on chlorophyll a (and algae) concentrations in streams. I also continued my phosphorus mitigation work by conducting feasibility analysis of a pilot-scale phosphorus filter system which was installed at a poultry house in the University of Arkansas. I am now examining the suitability of municipal waste water plants for treatment of landfill leachate in Ireland as part of and EPA STRIVE funded project. Research interests include: - Wastewater treatment technologies - Landfill leachate - Phosphorus loss from agriculture - Phosphorus loss mitigation technologies - Sustainable phosphorus management systems
