Organisation or Individual Expertise:
I have been working on High Nature Value farmland in the west of Ireland since 2005. My research highlighted the importance of wet grassland and semi-improved grassland to the biodiversity of Irish farms. It also showed that stocking density, length of rivers and streams and soil type diversity influenced the semi-natural habitat diversity on farms in Ireland. Field boundaries were identified as an important contributor to the biodiversity of more intensive farms; in some cases they were the only semi-natural habitat identified. My interests include agricultural policy in Europe and it's impacts on biodiversity, rural communities and HNV farmland. I have also worked on identifying Important Areas of Plant Biodiversity (IAPD) in Ireland using national datasets for all plants and linking them with rare and important plant records. I spent some time in northern California on a Fulbright Scholarship examined the stand dynamics of woodland on rare soil types in Redwood National Park. I am currently project co-ordinator on a national project identifying the distribution and extent of HNV farmland in Ireland http://idealhnv.wordpress.com/about-3/
