Organisation or Individual Expertise:
Macroom E is an established centre that develops enterprise, environmental and community projects for the public sector to influence positive change and a sustainable future (www.macroom-e.com). Projects developed by the centre include SMILE Resource Exchange, Wastematchers, Greenshoots, E Centres Initiative etc. SMILE Resource Exchange is a programme to support businesses to identify industrial symbiotic relationships that increase the level of reuse of materials between businesses, divert waste from landfill, identify new business opportunities from waste and save businesses money. SMILE is built on the premise that a waste in one business could be a resource in another and provided the platform for businesses to engage and to identify these synergies. Potential synergies are identified at unique SMILE networking events as well as an online exchange platform (www.smileexchange.ie). Through these mediums businesses can request “Wants” and make “Offers” of reusable materials, by-products, surplus stock etc. that could potentially be a resource in another business. Initially a pilot in Cork was delivered through a partnership between the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the National Waste Prevention Programme, Cork County & City Enterprise Boards (now Local Enterprise Offices (LEO)) and Cork County & City Councils. In 2011, expansion into Limerick/Clare/Kerry, launched by Minister for Environment, Community & Local Government, Phil Hogan was locally supported by the Limerick/Clare/Kerry Regional Waste Management Office (now Southern Region Waste Management Office) and the four Local Enterprise Boards in Cork, Limerick and Kerry (now LEO’s). In 2012 a partnership with South Dublin County Council, South Dublin Enterprise Board (now South Dublin LEO) saw the launch of the initiative in Dublin by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny. A nationwide launch of the project is due to take place in Autumn 2014. SMILE is a founding member of the European Industrial Symbiosis Association (EUR-ISA), a knowledge sharing platform enabling the industrial symbiosis networks across Europe to share data, best practice, innovation and expertise and enable wide scale and speedy implementation across Europe based on the proven models of EUR-ISA members. Macroom E is interesting in the role that industrial symbiosis can play in achieving green economic growth.
