Marcus has a strong academic output. Since completing his PhD in 2009 he has been the lead and/or sole author of 13 peer-reviewed papers, co-authoring four other peer-reviewed papers and eight a lead author of peer-reviewed reports. He has a strong track record in successful research funding applications. The FP7 TURAS project, which he was lead author, was awarded 15/15 by the reviewers (winning the top European Champions of Research Award from Enterprise Ireland). He has also been successful as work package leader on two other FP7 projects (KnowSeas and OPERAs), as well as success funding awards from national agencies as lead and partner authorships. Marcus was shortlisted for an ERC Starting Grant in 2015 and is an ERC Consolidator Grant panel expert (SH3). He is also an external evaluator on Horizon 2020 (ERA-NET). Marcus has been involved in adult education for almost 20 years, published articles in the Irish Times and Independent, and been interviewed on Morning Ireland, EcoEye, TV5 (France).
