Organisation or Individual Expertise:
McGrath is a Senior Lecturer within the School of Biological Sciences at the Queen's University of Belfast with more than 20 years’ experience in microbiology teaching, research training and project management in biogeochemistry. McGrath’s research focuses on three areas: the biogeochemistry of microbial phosphorus cycling, development of wastewater treatment systems for enhanced nutrient removal and recovery; and the microbial ecology of activated sludge, soil, sediment, freshwater and marine ecosystems. He has published over 50 papers and has consistently secured research funding from UK (BBSRC, EPSRC, NERC, Invest NI), Irish (Environmental Protection Agency, SFI) and EU (FP7) programmes to a value of €4 million with a further €6 million in consortium grants. These currently include an Environmental Protection Agency Grant on phosphorus (P) removal and recovery from waste (2015-2017: Project: 2014-W-LS-7) and a Science Foundation Ireland - Department of Education and Learning Award (2015-2019) to develop technologies for nutrient removal and recovery from anaerobic digestion plants. McGrath is also a member of a number of European and US committees focusing on nutrient recycling including: a) The European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform (ESPP). This organisation has members from across the P industry including the mining, processing, water and waste treatment, food, feed, agriculture, P reuse and recycling sectors, as well as universities and governmental organisations. Its mission is to share knowledge, contribute to European policy and provide technology transfer on P recovery and recycling. b) A US led 'Research Coordination Network' on which McGrath is a UK representative seeks to accelerate P (and N) sustainability technologies and practices. McGrath has also links with the FP7 funded P-Rex project which seeks to assess advanced technology options for P recovery from wastewater and in so doing identify the best available technologies for P recycling. Additionally McGrath works closely with a range of industrial partners including Irish Water, Northern Ireland Water, Severn Trent Water, Yorkshire Water, Moy Park, Devenish Nutrition, The Northern Ireland Environment Agency, the UK Environment Agency, the EPA (Ireland) the dairy industry and a number of SMEs across the wastewater spectrum.
