Organisation or Individual Expertise:
Research into human health and disease is one of the key players in improving the standard of life for all. Microbiology, a fundamental part of this has been split into clinical, molecular, biochemical among other fields but I feel that, thankfully, this trend is slowly reversing. Through my degree in molecular microbiology, PhD in parasitology and in my more recent research in cell and glyco-biology and antibiotics resistance in environmental and water microorganisms, I have crossed many disciplines, believing that knowledge of all produces a more rounded, productive scientist. I have worked in collaboration with clinicians, industrial partners, veterinary surgeons, chemists and engineers in the diverse environments of both academic and hospital labs. My success in research and its multi-disciplinary nature can be found in my publication record. Techniques I have gained and used in publications range from specific molecular genetic techniques including PCR and recombinant gene expression, characterisation of mode of action of antiparasitic agents and in the emerging field of glycobiology. I joined the SFI funded glycobiology research cluster led by NUIG in 2009. As part of this team we developed novel tools and techniques to advance the field of glycobiology. My role included knowledge and technology transfer between a number of scientists in different disciplines including molecular and cell biology, synthetic chemistry and analytical chemistry. I mentored 5 PhD and a masters student as part of my position as a senior research post-doc in the team. The role also involved design and supervision of undergraduate medical and science research projects. I was also involved in the successful application to SFI for renewal of funding for the research cluster, awarded in 2011. In addition to my collaborative and supervisory roles, I continued my lab based research characterising the interactions between specific pathogens and sugar structures, successfully publishing a number of articles in the field including co-authoring a review of the topic. I am currently a lecturer in DIT and am currently actively researching antibiotic resistance in water microbes and investigating novel techniques for microbial source tracking.
