Organisation or Individual Expertise:
At the Energy Policy and Modelling Group we integrated energy system models to provide evidence based assistance for short term and long term energy and climate policy decisions. We have has been engaged in energy policy and energy modelling research for over 15 years. The results of this research have been published in journal papers, conference proceedings and reports. In addition, the research has directly informed the development of national energy policy. The energy modelling and policy group in UCC is a team of 12 researchers lead by Dr. Brian Ó Gallachóir, based within the Environmental Research Institute (ERI). The ERI comprises 240 researchers focussing on energy, environment and marine research and is currently expanding with the €15 million Beaufort building (opening in summer 2015) that will house 135 researchers and host the multi-institutional SFI MaREI Research Centre. The group collaborates closely with a number of research teams within MaREI and the ERI on ocean energy, data analytics for industry, biogas and power to gas. We also have built strong inter-disciplinary collaboration (energy engineering and energy economics) with the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), and jointly organise an annual seminar on energy policy research in June. At an international level, the group is very active in developing energy modelling to improve the evidence base for policy decisions. Brian Ó Gallachóir chairs the Executive Committee of the International Energy Agency Energy Technology Systems Analysis Programme, the multilateral technology initiative of the IEA focussing in energy systems modelling. We are also active in global modelling of mitigation pathways to reduce CO2 and recent work on equitable burden sharing of global climate impact mitigations costs at regional levels. This work uses a global integrated assessment model and the research is in collaboration with PSI institute in Switzerland and VTT in Finland.
