Organisation or Individual Expertise:
I have three main fields of expertise: - maritime economic history from the Middle Ages to the Modern with a focus on the North Atlantic. In the last ten years or more I have spearheaded the new field of marine environmental history as global chair of the History of Marine Animal Populations (www.hmapcoml.org). - research policy studies. I chaired the EU METRIS report (Monitoring Emerging Research Trends in Social Sciences and Humanities). My interest is especially in identifying the potential of new inter- and transdisciplinary fields and methods. I am the co-author of the first ever World Humanities Report, to be published in 2014. - environmental humanities. How do individuals respond to calls for change in individual behavior? How can social innovation help redress institutionally ingrained patterns? And how do societies develop resilient responses to threats of crisis and collapse? I believe these are urgent research questions. I have a strong track record of attracting competitive funding for my research themes, and I currently head a small team of postdocs and an administrative officer.
