Understanding the spread and persistence of antimicrobial resistance in the environment. Antimicrobial resistance is one of the greatest threats facing the human race going forward. This problem is not simply limited to pathogens (both human and animal) but affects environmental bacteria also. I aim to investigate different environmental niches (water – surface, ground waste, soil) that may act as reservoirs for antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and trace how these resistance mechanisms spread into the human/animal infections. I aim to look for reservoirs of current (and potentially) future antimicrobial resistance (groundwater, polluted/non-polluted surface water, wastewater treatment plants, manure treated soils, etc) and understand how antimicrobial resistance is selected and spread both in the environment (through Horizontal Gene Transfer, Mobile Genetic Elements – Plasmids, Integrating Conjugative Elements, etc.) and from the environment into human/animal pathogens. Techniques will include Microbiological techniques, molecular biology, geostatistical analysis.
