Organisation or Individual Expertise:
My research focuses on molecular ecology, which incorporates biogeography, characterization of genetic diversity, genomics and evolution. I am particularly interested in the Irish tree flora and adaptation in forest tree species to climate change. I have experience of genetic mapping and whole genome assembly - for the poplar genome. I also have considerable experience of developing and applying molecular markers for population genetics in a variety of species. I am interested in characterizing genetic variation in wild populations that can potentially be incorporated into breeding applications, e.g. variation in wood formation genes in willow, genetic variation in genes involved in phenology and bud burst. I am also interested in DNA barcoding. Species I work with include terrestrial and freshwater plants: oaks (Quercus spp.), poplars (Populus spp.), willows (Salix spp.), fresh water crowfoot (Ranunculus spp.), saxifrages (Saxifraga spp.).
