Organisation or Individual Expertise:
My research programme uses isotope geochemistry and geochronology to study evolution of the solid Earth. I am interested in geochemically and temporally characterising significant events in Earth history. My current research projects span the present day back to the Archean (i.e. pre 2500 million years before present). Some of these projects also deal with formation of economic mineral deposits, geochemical and isotope proxies for environmental change and geosphere-biosphere-hydrosphere-atmosphere interactions.

Organisation or Individual Expertise Keywords:
geochronology, geochemistry, isotopes, environment, cold water corals, great oxidation event, early Earth, mineral deposits, ophiolites, magmatism, metamorphism, tectonics, sedimentary provenance, volcanism, super-eruptions, climate change, gold, porphyry deposits, mineral deposits, mineral resources, strategic metals, rare metals, timescale, radon, radioactivity, biosphere, Sr-isotopes, TIMS, ICP-MS, laser ablation, zircon.

Relevant information in relation to Participation relevant experts groups

I am currently supervising a PRTLI V funded Ph.D. project entitled: Biomineralisation and isotope proxies for environmental change. This project is investigating the suitability of biogenic cold water carbonates (corals) to use as high-resolution proxies for environmental change. I am also supervising a Ph.D. project entitled: Strontium isotopes in the Irish biosphere. This project deals with mapping terrestrial \"iso-scapes\" and investigating interactions between atmospheric-lithospheric derived biosphere sources from a chemical and isotopic perspective. A practical application of this study is in biodiversity, functioning of ecosystems and animal migration studies and how these change in response to climate change. Some of my research deals with natural volcanic hazards and in particular in temporally characterising the periodicity of super-eruptions and how these impact on climate change.
