Organisation or Individual Expertise:
Dr. Tuohy is the PI and Group leader of the Molecular Glycobiotechnology Group (MGBG), NUI Galway. Dr. Tuohy & her research team have a strong track record in Glycobiotechnology and Enzyme Biotechnology with ~20 years experience in fungal enzyme systems and the glycobiology of terrestrial plants and algae. Current research activities are focused on the following themes: 1. Enzymes as key bioenergy, biorefinery and green chemistry tools. 2. Novel thermostable enzymes from GRAS fungal sources (Enzyme biodiscovery), especially biomass-modifying enzymes; 3. Protein production, engineering and molecular genetics of thermophilic fungal species & their optimization and exploitation as ‘cell factories’ for biotechnological applications; 4. Structure-Function, recovery, enzymatic modification & mechanism of action of high-value biochemicals and bioactive compounds (i.e. carbohydrates, lipids, phenolics and proteins/peptides) from marine (algae) and terrestrial sources (‘Glycobioengineering’). Dr. Maria Tuohy is one of 5 PIs in the national EI/IDA supported, industry-led Technology Centre for Biorefining and Bioenergy (www.tcbb.ie).
