Organisation or Individual Expertise:
The overall goals of my research are to improve understanding of the links between human activities and changes in biodiversity and ecosystem functioning and to provide a scientific basis for effective environmental management. My research in these areas has focussed on marine intertidal organisms and ecosystems. My original interests were in animal behaviour and my PhD focussed on movements of marine gastropods in relation to habitats provided by bivalves. I have maintained these core interests with a series of publications on animal behaviour, community ecology and the role of biogenic habitats. As my career has developed, I have also targeted my research more directly to characterising, monitoring and reducing human impacts on marine ecosystems. As well as work on fisheries and aquaculture, I have tested impacts of stressors ranging from climate-induced disturbances to nutrients, organic matter, metals, biocides and invasive species. I seek to integrate impacts at levels of biological organisation from the cellular and physiological to the organismal, community and ecosystem and to derive cost-effective indicators of change that span those levels. I have taken a particular interest in the relationship between changes in biodiversity and effects on ecosystem functioning, executing complex experiments in the field and in laboratory mesocosms and replicating some of this work widely within Europe. Much of my current work is examining the complex interactions between multiple environmental stressors, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.
