Resource or Project Abstract

UKCIP data, Irish weather station data, ERA-40 data as well as satellite data from the HOAPS database have been used for the validation. The UKCIP data are available as monthly averages for 2 m temperature and monthly sums for precipitation. The 14 Irish synoptic stations have measured hourly values of 2 m temperature, precipitation, total cloud cover and net shortwave radiation amongst other parameters over the last decades. The ERA-40 data are reanalysis data from the ECMWF. One fixed version of the operational analysis and forecast model has been run for 40 years. The advantage, compared to using analysis data, is that artificial trends due to changes in the analysis model are avoided. Various observation data sources (synoptic station data, rawinsonde data and satellite data) are included in the assimilation process. The HOAPS data are an extensive satellite data base including a variety including a variety of meteorological parameters important for the water and energy budget. This database has been derived by the Meteorological Institute of the University of Hamburg and the Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg.

Geographical and Spatial Information Related To This Resource

Description of Geographical Characteristics of This Project or Dataset
The grid resolution of GCMs used for climate modelling is typically about 2.5, representing an ability to resolve features of size not smaller than 500km (twice the grid interval). This is adequate for a general representation of the global climate, but quite inadequate for the simulation of the detail and pattern of change in a region the size of Ireland. A proven method of generating more precise, accurate and detailed information on a national scale is by use of a regional climate model (RCM). Such a model has a typical resolution of 0.5 Degrees allowing representation of features down to scales of approximately 100 km. By the technique of double nesting, even greater resolution over Ireland is feasible.

Lineage information about this project or dataset
The C4I Project is funded through three channels. The Higher Education Authority
is providing approximately 33% of the funding, under its Programme for Research
in Third-Level Institutions (PRTLI). Funding will be available for two postdoctoral
scientists and a post-graduate student for the C4I Project. Funding is also being provided
by HEA for a computational Grid, with nodes in TCD, UCD, and NUIG. The
Grid will provide a computational resource far beyond anything currently available in
Ireland. The remaining funding comes from the Environmental Protection Agency,
under the National Development Plan (33%) and from Sustainable Energy Ireland
(33%)
Supplementary Information
The data stored here cover the validation period 1961-1999 and the prediction period 2021-2060. It is organised in folders by year and month with one file for each 3 hour period GRIB format. The top level of the archive is at http:/coe.epa.ie/c4i/data/. As an example, the file for 2021/01/25 03:00 is at http:/coe.epa.ie/c4i/data/2021/01/fc202101250300pp

C4I uses a regional climate model RCA from the Rossby Centre to investigate the characteristics of the past and future climate of Ireland
