Resource or Project Abstract

The Clarianna river catchment near Nenagh is instrumented with four weirs with water level recorders and automatic river water samplers. Samples are analysed for phosphorus (P) content. Meteorological data are collected automatically at a dedicated automatic weather station. P in soils and sediments is measured. The relationships between P concentrations in water, soils, and sediments, and meteorological parameters and season are explored. These data plus information on farming practice and river drainage will be used to model P pathways and fluxes, using GIS technology. Results will increase our understanding of the movement of nutrients from fields to surface water, and thus enable more successfully control of eutrophication. 3-4 year study. Major outputs will be papers in journals plus an EPA report on causes of eutrophication of Irish surface waters, and 1 PhD thesis.

Geographical and Spatial Information Related To This Resource

Description of Geographical Characteristics of This Project or Dataset
The Clarianna agricultural mini-catchment is located to the north-east of Nenagh, Co. Tipperary and discharges its waters into the Nenagh River. While it extends ca. 12 km in the east-west direction, its north-south dimension ranges from ca. 2.5 to 5 km. It ranges in altitude from ca. 104 to 57 m in the east-west direction, but it has a number of higher points on its northern perimeter, including one of 153 m. The Clarianna river is fed by natural streams and drains from a number of sub-catchments which vary in size and shape, with some connected into the river by channel deepening. The catchment is floored by massively bedded ?pure? limestone that is covered virtually everywhere, either by till, fluvio-glacial material, alluvium or peat. Agricultural activity is divided between tillage, dairying and dry-stock farming.
