Resource or Project Abstract

This work describes the trends investigated for SO2-S(micrograms/m3,SO4-S (micrograms/m3)),and NO2-N (micrograms/m3) based on air samples collected on a daily basis at Valentia Observatory, Cahirciveen, Co. Kerry and analysed in the Met Éireann laboratory since 1981. Their trends have been observed using annual average values. The linear regression based trend line shows a significant reduction in SO2-S levels, approximately a decrease of 60% during the measurement period. Also a study has been performed to investigate if any correlation exists between the pollutant concentrations and wind direction.Wind data is gathered at Valentia Observatory on an hourly basis. This wind data was assigned wind direction as follows; N (340o - 20o), NE (30o - 60o), E (70o - 110o), SE (120o - 150o), S (160o - 200o), SW ( 210o - 240o), W (250o - 290o) and NW (300o - 330o). Wind sector analysis of the data showed that the highest concentrations for SO2-S were correlated with winds coming from the east, north east and south easterly directions.

Geographical and Spatial Information Related To This Resource

Description of Geographical Characteristics of This Project or Dataset
Valentia Observatory is part of Met Éireann, the Irish Meteorological Service. It is located one kilometre west of the town of Cahirciveen, on the estuary of the Feartha river. The Observatory carries out surface weather and upper-air meteorological measurements, as well as a wide range of other scientific activities including ozone monitoring, geomagnetics, seismology, solar radiation and environmental monitoring. The Observatory is called Valentia because it was originally located on Valentia Island. 51° 56' 23"N 10° 14'40"W 11M above mean sea level
