Resource or Project Abstract

This study explores the realisation of a prototype system for the detection of gas pressure levels on landll sites and the transmission of this information to on-line repositories in a real time fashion. The
design, development, validation and deployment of such a system is outlined. Harvested data sets are presented and subsequently analysed showing summary statistics.
Subsequently, the data were analysed in terms of detection of significant changes/events within the
trends i.e. 21 separate events were successfully detected. Later, the data were compared to the data collected from the SCADA system located on site and it was shown that the detected events were not artifacts from our device as they were apparent within both datasets, thus showing the validity of our system. Overall, this study has shown the capability to automatically detect important events during the ongoing management of a landfill site i.e. as serious as a flare shutdown. The other events at this stage were unidentiable, however this is the responsibility of future studies in this area. Only by initially identifying these events can we start to ask the questions of their meaning. This study has
provided the means for identifying such events and has demonstrated that these analytical tools have been developed for these type of studies and are available for future use.

At present, environmental monitoring is almost always performed on a manual basis i.e. either
by the use of expensive hand-held equipment in-situ and/or by the transportation of samples to centralised facilities equipped with high-end instrumentation where they are analysed by highly trained and qualified personnel. Unfortunately, due to the high costs involved, there is a limitation on environmental monitoring capabilities using these approaches, in terms of spatial and temporal monitoring of prioritised environmental contaminants.
The CLARITY research team has striven to address this issue through the development of autonomous
sensing platforms capable of performing complex analytical measurements autonomously in-situ, and making the resulting data accessible via web interfaces to regulatory authorities or other interested parties.
