Resource or Project Abstract

Welcome to the Environmental Protection Agency of Ireland's Long Range Transboundary Air Pollutant database. From this resource you can access a rich volume of information on Ireland's national transboundary air pollutants.

As a Party to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP), Ireland is required to annually report emission data for a wide range of air pollutants and other substances released into the atmosphere.

The data are needed to support the work of the Convention in addressing well-known environmental problems such as urban pollution, acidification and trophospheric ozone formation arising from classic pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur dioxide (SO2), non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs), ammonia (NH3), carbon monoxide (CO) and particulate matter (PM), and for the implementation of its Protocols on Heavy Metals and Persistent Organic Pollutants.

The data are compiled according to the UN/ECE Reporting Guidelines on Annual Inventories which describe the scope and reporting of the emission inventories under the Convention. They specify the methodologies and procedures to be followed for submitting consistent and comparable data on an annual basis in a timely, efficient and transparent manner to meet the needs of the Convention.
Supplementary Information
Ireland is also requested to annually report an Informative Inventory Report in accordance with the outline in annex VI of the reporting Guidelines. This report outlines the methodologies and data underlying Ireland?s emission inventory submission.
