Resource Abstract
The formation of ground level ozone (O3) is complex. It is formed from reactions between pollutants such as NOX, carbon monoxide and various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the presence of sunlight. Ozone is also a transboundary pollutant whose impacts mainly affect central and southern Europe during the summer months. Ozone levels over Ireland can be influenced by the transport of pollutants from other European regions and across the Atlantic from North America. High concentrations of ground level ozone can affect the functioning of the respiratory system and damage crops and other vegetation.

Supplementary Information For This Resource
| Resource Lineage Information |
| Directive 2002/3/EC relates to ozone in ambient air (CEC, 2002) and incorporates specific EU ozone target levels for the first time in addition to hourly thresholds. |
| Supplementary Metadata Information |
| Ozone is measured using an API M400 ozone analyser by U.V. Photometry. Ozone absorbs light of wavelength 253.7nm. The amount of light absorbed in sample air is measured and converted to a value for ozone concentration.
FILENAME CONVENTION: To intuitively guide users on the data contained in each of the dataset files the FILENAMES shown abide by a simple convention. The first part of the filename corresponds to the station location where the monitoring took place, the second refers to the pollutant measured. The third part of the filename corresponds to the year of measurement. For datasets which contain data measured over two years rather than one the year provided includes the year when measurement commented at that station site. If measurement data was collected at using a mobile monitoring station the code TR will follow the pollutant name. FILE TYPES: For the most part files will be available in one of three different formats. MS Excel spreadsheet format (look for the XLS file name), Comma Separated formats (CSV file type), or plain text (TXT file type). The latter two will open in recent versions of MS Excel. |
