Notes on geo-location calculation

Every time a resource is downloaded from SAFER-Data a record of this is stored in the SAFER-Data web-access logging database. The IP address of the user downloading this resource is recorded. It is possible to find out the approximate geographical location of the user from the IP address provided when the resource was downloaded. However there are many technical factors which complicate the process of geo-referencing an IP address. These include:

• The user may be accessing SAFER-Data using a mobile connection - therefore the IP address is dynamically allocated and may not link back to a unique geographic location
• The Internet Service Provider (ISP), proxy web-server, etc through which the user is accessing the Internet may not allow back tracking of an IP address.

SAFER-Data uses the GeoLite (City) Geo-IP database. This provides a very reliable geo-referencing of IP addresses back to city and town level for the whole world.
